CitySprouts Garden

garden2_june_2014.pngThe courtyard garden was created when the school was renovated in 2002. CitySprouts program arrived to the then-Fitzgerald School in 2004 and began transforming the landscaped courtyard area into a working school garden. The brick paths, garden shed, and greenhouse in the original landscape remain; the vegetables, fruit shrubs, flowers, and herbs arrived with CitySprouts, along with students’ and teachers’ active use of the space for learning and enjoyment. The garden also includes a beautiful grape arbor.

CitySprouts is a school garden program founded on the principle that all children should experience hands-on learning with real-world applications, support and practice in making good food choices, and a life-long connection to the natural world. CitySprouts’ garden educator is at the Peabody School twice each week during the fall and spring to support teachers' lessons and projects in the school garden. Our FoodCorps service member helps teachers' with projects through the winter. Middle schoolers throughout the city participate in CitySprouts summer program in July and August.
