Exciting News from Ms. Ford: December 18, 2014

We want to let you know about some exciting news at the Peabody. The 5th grade teachers, along with our Literacy Coach, have received a grant from the state of Massachusetts to pilot one of the DESE Model Curriculum Units in Literacy. Ms. Bielecki, Mr. Kelly, and Ms. Vecchiarello will work closely with one another to create a cross content experience for the fifth grade students. The unit, entitled What is Financial Literacy?, develops reading and writing skills as well as an understanding of the personal finance concepts of earning, saving, spending, banking, borrowing, growing, and sharing.

In addition to unit resources and materials, the team will participate in professional development to support their teaching of the unit. Ms. Vecchiarello attended a two day conference at the beginning of December to begin the process. Next, the team will create an action plan to guide their work moving forward. Additional meeting times and professional development work are scheduled in the upcoming weeks.
These Model Curriculum Units are designed to exemplify the expectations outlined in the MA Curriculum Frameworks for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics incorporating the Common Core State Standards, as well as all other MA Curriculum Frameworks. Additionally, this unit addresses specific expectations of the National Standards for Financial Literacy. These standards were published in 2013, the work being conducted by a variety of economic and financial organizations. These standards are intended to increase students’ knowledge of financial choices through the K-12 education system. This unit includes two of these standards.
