Ms. Cardoso's 4th Grade class will welcome spring and celebrate National Poetry Month in April by beginning a writing unit all about Poetry. The fourth graders have just finished a Persuasive Writing unit and are excited to have a fresh start just in time for spring. Switching from prose to poetry allows students to build on work using sensory language, similes, and using specific word choices to craft a variety of poetic forms. At the start of this unit, the students become engaged in the topic of poetry using the novel written in poetry, Love That Dog, by Sharon Creech. This book is written in free verse from the perspective of a young boy who very much dislikes his poetry assignments given out by his teacher. With the help of his teacher, he begins to recognize how poetry can give voice to his thoughts and feelings and even help him cope with some painful events in his life.

Bird~ By Sarah Soroca

I never get to play
I'm shut up in my cage all day
While Tom and Tim go out,
I stay and lay about
I wish it didn't feel like I'm never missed
It's like I don't exist
So, while you go out,
I get bored and start to doubt
That you don't realize I'm about
