Fifth Grade Teachers' Update: October 2015
Posted on 10/05/2015
The 2015-2016 school year is off to an excellent start! We are enjoying getting to know each other, and working on building a community both in our own classrooms, and as an entire fifth grade cohort. We do this through the Responsive Classroom approach to classroom management, by hosting a morning meeting to start our school day. At this meeting we practice age appropriate greetings, and all students participate in a “morning message” which is an interactive way of sharing information about one another, daily news, or what we are learning about in the classroom. Students also enjoy playing social games with one another that help promote communication and good sportsmanship.

There are many exciting opportunities for students to take advantage of this year. One of which is our NSTAR fundraiser in the fall, where students learn about energy saving practices to help our environment, and sell lightbulbs in the process to friends and family members to help fund our annual W. Alton Jones Science Camp field trip.

Fifth grade students also have started mentoring their “book buddies” once a week, which are Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten classrooms. We meet to share new stories, reading strategies, and our love of books and learning! We often partner during All School Shares as well as writing projects as the year progresses.

We’re so excited for all that this year has in store for us!
