Peabody Hosts National Geographic Bee
Posted on 01/22/2016
The Peabody School held its first ever National Geographic Bee on Friday, January 22nd!

About the Bee
The National Geographic Bee is an annual geography competition organized by the National Geography Society. Students in grades four through eight are eligible to compete in this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge, and each year, more than four million students take part.

The school bee covered topics such as U.S. geography, U.S. cities, U.S city comparison, odd item out, National Parks, continents, world’s cities, and cultural geography.

In the Preliminary Competition, a series rounds will be asked to narrow the field down to ten players. (There will be a Preliminary Competition even if there fewer than ten contestants in the Bee, but it will not eliminate anyone.) The students have 15 seconds to answer each question. The remaining ten players will take part in the Final Competition, which consists of another series of questions (rounds) for each student. If there are more than two students tied at the end, then the students are asked as many questions as it takes to narrow the field once again to two students.

Once the field has been narrowed down to 2 students, the championship round will begin and the school champion is decided. The school champion will receive a certificate and a school Bee champion medal.

WinnersThe winner of the school bee will take an online qualifying test which is sent to National Geographic to determine the top 100 scores in the state of Massachusetts. If a student earns one of the top 100 scores in the state he/she will go to the National Geographic State Geography Bee. The winner of the state bee goes to the National Geographic Geography Bee in Washington DC.
